Angeles Nieto (b. Madrid, 1963) completed her studies in 1993 at the Academy for the Visual Arts in Maastricht, her second period of study following the art history course she completed in the city of her birth, Madrid. She is currently living and working in Amsterdam. Her work is particularly colourful and vibrant. Her Spanish roots come very clearly to the fore in terms of colour, themes and form. Countryside depictions, light and dark, reality and dream, heavenly and earthly, are aspects which constantly recur in her work. The vivid colours are created through the influence of the southern light, sharp shadows, enormous contrasts. People and animals, life, with its feelings, dreams and creations, intertwined between earth, water and air. Her own handwriting to depict her vision of life. Since she completed her studies her works can be found in many places throughout the Netherlands and abroad. Her art is regularly exhibited in galleries and companies. Nieto’s work turns up in Dutch, German, Spanish, Belgian and Japanese collections. |
“We are the material of the stars.” Our body, skin, bones..., are made of the same material, our spiritual life is born, grows and radiates in the same form. Together we are part of the universe, we are also stars. So big and so small, as small as one of the millions of lights in the cosmos, far in the dark-blue heaven, as large as the nearest sun, universe and individual. We have life, we give off warmth. Everything moves, our heart beats, our blood flows, we breathe, the earth makes circles, it is light and dark, the sun comes, the moon comes. A journey in search of yourself, a journey of exploration in the world, and as the ultimate form of transference, flying, free from all borders and limits. (Freedom). And at night when the stars are seen, dreaming, dreaming as in a hibernation (a night of sleep), producing new energy, reliving experiences from one’s own body, back to the stars, back to our self.
